Honda NSX: A Legend Born from Formula 1

The Dream: A Japanese Supercar

In the late 1980s, Honda was dominating Formula 1 with McLaren, winning championships with Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost. But Honda had an even bigger goal—creating a supercar that could rival Ferrari, while still being reliable and practical.

Formula 1 DNA in a Road Car

The NSX borrowed technology straight from F1:

  • ✔️ First production car with an **all-aluminum** chassis.
  • ✔️ Mid-engine layout for perfect weight distribution.
  • ✔️ VTEC-powered **3.0L V6**, inspired by Honda’s F1 engines.

Ayrton Senna’s Influence

Honda asked their F1 legend, Ayrton Senna, to test the NSX at **Suzuka Circuit**. After pushing the car to its limits, he gave his verdict:

"I think it’s a little fragile."

Senna’s feedback led to Honda **stiffening the chassis by 50%**, refining the suspension, and improving the car’s handling. The result? One of the best-driving supercars of its time.

The Supercar That Shocked Ferrari

When the NSX launched in 1990, it stunned the world. It was faster than many Ferraris but **cheaper, more comfortable, and extremely reliable**. Ferrari was so shocked that they had to improve their own cars!

The NSX Legacy

The first-gen NSX (1990–2005) remains a legend. Even the 2016 NSX kept its **F1-inspired engineering**, proving that a true supercar doesn’t have to be unreliable.
